Pfizer’s Nexium and Prilosec are both proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). The two are commonly prescribed together for relieving acid reflux, heartburn, and GERD. They each contain the same active ingredient, esomeprazole magnesium.
Both medications are proton pump inhibitors, meaning they work by reducing acid production in your stomach. They differ in the way they work and the side effects they cause.
Prilosec, on the other hand, is a more potent proton pump inhibitor. It’s available both as a generic and as a brand-name tablet. It comes in 20mg strength capsules that you swallow with water. It can also be taken with or without food. The generic version is more affordable than Prilosec. However, it’s important to talk to your doctor about your individual needs and the risks of taking the medication.
If you have questions about the different versions of Prilosec, talk to your doctor about them.

PPIs are essentially proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). PPIs are drugs that make your stomach more acidic, which increases the production of acid in your intestines and stomach. This acid then travels down your spine and into your brain. These drugs are also known as acid reflux medications (ERMs).
Prilosec, on the other hand, treats acid reflux by making your stomach more acidic. PPIs are used in two ways:
You can buy either one of these drugs with or without food.
Nexium is a brand-name medication used to treat heartburn, which is when the stomach produces acid. It’s also used to treat reflux. Both PPIs and esomeprazole (the active ingredient in Nexium) are used to treat acid reflux, also known as heartburn.
Nexium is one of the more expensive brand-name medications for treating acid reflux. However, the price of a brand-name medication can vary from one pharmacy to another. Some pharmacies charge a membership fee for PPIs. It is more expensive for you to buy a generic medication.
Nexium also has a similar mechanism of action as Prilosec: it stops acid production by blocking an enzyme called H+/K+-ATPase. This enzyme is responsible for converting acid into a more acidic form, allowing your stomach to produce less acid.
In people with reflux disease, PPIs are also used to treat heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). They work by lowering acid production in your stomach. They also reduce stomach acid production. This reduces the severity of acid-related stomach discomfort.
PPIs also can be used to treat reflux. In patients with GERD, PPIs also help reduce symptoms of acid reflux, such as heartburn and acid reflux. They also help relieve symptoms of GERD, such as acid regurgitation and pain in the chest.
Nexium also has another mechanism of action, which is to prevent stomach acid from getting stuck in your stomach. This is called proton pump inhibition. PPIs are taken for about two weeks before they start to work. It is important to talk to your doctor about this.
PPIs are both brand-name and generic medications. They’re both used to treat GERD and heartburn. As of January 1, 2024, both PPIs and esomeprazole have been approved for use in adults as a GERD treatment option.
PPIs are also available as a brand-name tablet, such as Nexium.
The price of the popular acid reflux medication Nexium is set to drop to as low as $2 per tablet, the Hong Kong-based pharmaceutical firm said in a recent note.
The drop in the price could be due to lower demand and supply, the firm said, adding that the market for the drug is experiencing a “very strong” growth rate.
Nexium, which is used to treat heartburn, acid reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), is sold over-the-counter (OTC) in the U. S., and is available as a generic version under the brand name Prilosec and as a prescription generic version under the name Nexium. It is a member of the proton pump inhibitor class, meaning it works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach.
Prilosec, which has U. S. sales of approximately $50 billion, is available for $10 per tablet, while Nexium, which is sold under the brand name Prilosec, comes in at $8.99 per tablet.
Prilosec’s price in the U. could be down significantly due to the drop in demand, especially as the market for the drug in China and India is also expected to grow over the forecast period.
“Prilosec has been experiencing a strong growth rate and is still a very important medication for patients,” said Jim Staheli, a pharmacologist at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
“With this price drop, patients have more options to access a treatment that is appropriate for their needs and to treat their condition. This can help in making informed decisions for their health.”
“The price of Prilosec is set to be at the lowest level in the pharmaceutical market and is therefore a major factor to take into account when making decisions about the price of any medication,” he added.
The price of Nexium could increase as demand for the drug increases, as patients have to keep taking the medication to treat their condition, or they may need to switch to a different drug altogether.
“Patients will be able to buy the medication under the brand name Prilosec or generic Nexium at a very reasonable price, while also paying attention to the availability of the brand-name drug at a reasonable price. The price of Prilosec will also help in making this decision,” Dr. Staheli added.
Dr. Naidoo, a gastroenterologist at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, said that with the price of Prilosec coming down, it is possible to save money on prescription drugs by focusing on the cost of the medication, rather than the price of the brand name drug.
“Prilosec is a great option for patients looking to save money on their medications, especially for those with busy lifestyles or those who need long-term care. Patients who are looking for a reliable medication like Prilosec can look for other options,” she added.
